Every year in December these cookies are made at my house! If not at my house, I trek over to my sisters house and we make them there. But, either way, they get baked and decorated in time for Christmas.
Of course, these can be made any time of year, for any Holiday, party or weekend treat. They are particularly fun to decorate with kids. Making a large batch for a kids birthday party and allowing them to decorate would definitely be a fun and rewarding time!
My original recipe was double what you see here. Apparently, my grandparents enjoyed baking rather large batches of cookies!
Italian Love Knots
• 5 ½ cups of flour
• 1 cup of granulated sugar
• ½ pound of butter
• 6 eggs
• 5 teaspoons of baking powder
• 1 tablespoon of vanilla **
Preheat oven to 375°.
Line 2 cookie sheets with no-stick foil.
Cream sugar and butter.
Add eggs and vanilla.
Add flour and powder.
Mix all ingredients together.
To form the “knot,” take about a tablespoon of dough; roll it out using your hands on a lightly floured surface. Then, cross the ends of the dough. This forms what looks like a knot. Place the knots on lined cookie sheet.
Bake for 12-15 minutes.
** For a unique flavor add amaretto flavoring in place of the vanilla.
Icing
• Confectioners’ sugar
• Water
• Food coloring
• Flavoring (optional), (vanilla, banana, coconut, etc.)
Sprinkles
Mix sugar and water together to form a creamy paste.
Add flavoring to icing.
Add your coloring and spread over baked cookies.
Add sprinkles.
Allow icing to dry completely.
